Customer Background
Air Products is a recognized participant in the hydrogen energy sector. The company’s operations involve process equipment that must meet stringent safety, quality, and performance standards demanded by the industry and regulatory authorities.
This project required the equipment engineered to ASME U, KGS standards using SA516 Gr.70, SA240 304/304L, S31803 (Duplex 2205), SB536 N08330, SB-163 N06600 (Alloy 600), reflecting the technical demands of the application and the client’s commitment to equipment reliability and regulatory compliance.
Challenges and Engineering Requirements
Modular Design for Shipyard Integration
Skid-mounted systems must be engineered as self-contained modules that can be transported, lifted, and connected at the installation site with minimal field work. Every pipe connection, cable entry, and structural attachment point must be precisely located to match the ship or plant interface drawings. The skid frame itself must be designed for the lifting and transport loads, which often exceed the operating loads.
Multi-Discipline Engineering Coordination
Process skids integrate mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and structural engineering into a single deliverable. Coordination between disciplines is critical: piping routes must accommodate instrument access, electrical cable trays must clear process piping, and the structural frame must support all components while remaining within the weight and dimensional constraints of the installation space.
Classification Society and Flag State Requirements
Marine equipment must satisfy the requirements of the classification society (ASME U, KGS) and the flag state of each vessel. This typically means type-approval testing, witnessed factory acceptance tests, and documentation packages that include material certificates, weld maps, pressure test records, and functional test reports — all reviewed and stamped by the classification surveyor.
Why Air Products Selected Lmart
Modular fabrication expertise. Lmart has delivered hundreds of skid-mounted systems for marine and onshore applications. The workshop is organized for efficient module assembly, with dedicated areas for piping fabrication, electrical integration, and functional testing.
Classification society experience. Lmart works regularly with DNV, BV, CCS, LR, ABS, NK, and KR surveyors. The quality team understands each society’s documentation requirements and inspection protocols, minimizing delays during the manufacturing process.
Single-source delivery. From engineering through fabrication, assembly, testing, and documentation, Lmart delivers complete skid packages without reliance on subcontracted integration — reducing schedule risk and ensuring consistent quality across all system components.
Engineering and Manufacturing Solution
Lmart engineered and fabricated the equipment for Air Products to ASME U, KGS using SA516 Gr.70, SA240 304/304L, S31803 (Duplex 2205), SB536 N08330, SB-163 N06600 (Alloy 600). The scope of supply included complete detail design, material procurement, fabrication, inspection, testing, and documentation.
Key engineering considerations for this project included thermal-hydraulic performance optimization, material selection for the specific process environment, and compliance with ASME U, KGS requirements for design, fabrication, and inspection.
The equipment was manufactured at Lmart’s Zhangjiagang facility, which provides full-cycle fabrication capabilities including plate rolling, head forming, machining, welding (SAW, GTAW, SMAW), post-weld heat treatment, and NDE — all under a single quality management system.
Quality Control and Project Execution
Manufacturing was conducted under Lmart’s ISO 9001 quality management system with classification society survey throughout:
- Material verification: All materials supplied with mill certificates reviewed and accepted by the classification surveyor; impact testing per classification rules for low-temperature service where applicable
- Welding and NDE: Qualified welding procedures with welder performance qualifications current for the applicable classification society; radiographic and/or ultrasonic examination per classification requirements
- Pressure and leak testing: Hydrostatic testing witnessed by the classification surveyor; pneumatic or helium leak testing where specified for gas-tight service
- Factory acceptance test: Functional testing of complete assemblies including control system verification, safety device testing, and performance validation
- Documentation: Complete data package including classification certificates, material certificates, weld records, NDE reports, and test reports
Equipment was delivered to Air Products’s designated shipyard, meeting the project schedule requirements.

Results and Business Impact
Lmart successfully delivered the equipment to Air Products, meeting the project’s quality, schedule, and documentation requirements. The equipment was manufactured in SA516 Gr.70, SA240 304/304L, S31803 (Duplex 2205), SB536 N08330, SB-163 N06600 (Alloy 600) to ASME U, KGS standards, with full documentation packages accepted by the client and applicable inspection authorities.
This project reinforces Lmart’s position as a qualified manufacturer for hydrogen energy applications, demonstrating the company’s ability to deliver equipment that meets international quality and certification standards.
